Letter from the Editor
Spring, 2000
Greetings, and welcome to the Spring 2000 issue of the all-electronic TCOS Bulletin.
As some of you know, the lab hosting the tcos.org domain, including the TCOS mailing lists and the TCOS Bulletin, was cracked earlier this spring. Unfortunately, this resulted in a loss of data and we are still finding areas of the web pages that were out-of-date in our backup tapes. We have implemented new backup software and policies, so we can avoid similar problems in the future.
In his letter from the chair, Dejan describes his plans for the future of TCOS. Please do read it and send him your comments.
Jinsuo Zhang and Sumi Helal have provided us with the results of a survey on Linux for Microsoft Windows CE devices (now called PocketPC). PocketPC is Microsoft's latest attempt to break into the PDA/handheld computing market. Their earlier attempts have been failures, with Palm controlling 70% of the PDA market. For some lively discussion on the future of PocketPC and PalmOS, try some of these links:
This discussion of Linux on small devices gives us another vantage point from which to view the battle for the PDA.In closing, I again encourage our constitutents to provide content for future issues of the TCOS Bulletin.
Sincerely,
Steve Chapin
